Individualized Education Plans

What are Individualized Education Plans, and does your child with ADHD need one?

By Fatima Malik

Kids with ADHD have neurodivergent brains. This means that they have a brain different from the majority of the population – the majority is called neurotypical.

Our society revolves around the needs of the majority and their typical brains. Even though ADHD has been around a while, the changes in our community haven’t caught up with the awareness (maybe the right people aren’t aware).

So our school systems, syllabuses, careers, tv shows, furniture, daily routine expectations (and so many other things) are designed for the neurotypical majority.

What that does for the neurodivergent minority is that it makes everyday life a struggle.

Struggling to keep up with the expectations of society and experiencing more failures than their neurotypical peers; kids with ADHD have it far more difficult.

Neurodivergence requires a divergent reality to fit into.

A significant change required for the neurodivergent brain is Divergent Education or IEP (Individualized Education Plans).

What are Individualized Education Plans for Kids with ADHD

IEP was a concept developed to ensure that a child with an identified disability attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives specialized instruction and related services.

What that means is that instead of trying to conform to a ‘normal’ schooling system, we need to acknowledge that these kids are different and require a different set of learning wheels.

IEP consultants can help with that. Most organizations that help kids with ADHD have a system to identify the child’s needs and set up plans with the parents to collaborate with the child’s school and medical doctors to forge an educational program that best suits the child.

These plans can include subjects of interest and challenges, seating arrangements, learning mediums (like videos or text etc.), visual stimulants etc.
